What Makes a Platform Real?
At what point does a collection of businesses become a platform? Not when the website has a page called Our Companies.

The word platform is used loosely, partly because it sounds like an achievement and partly because it is difficult to disprove. A holding company with five subsidiaries can describe itself as a platform on the day the fifth deal completes.
What a platform is not
It is not common ownership. It is not a shared logo. It is not five companies appearing in the same presentation. It is not consolidated revenue.
Imagine a group that acquires five businesses, each of which keeps its own customers, suppliers, technology, management and commercial processes, with nothing meaningful travelling between them. They may all be good companies. The group may be financially successful. Operationally, almost no platform capability exists.
What makes it real
A platform becomes real when the connection between the businesses starts producing capabilities that did not exist before.
- A customer relationship in one company creates an opportunity for another
- A supplier relationship improves access across several markets
- A technology investment becomes useful across the group rather than in one place
- A management capability developed in one business becomes available to others
- A successful product enters another country through an existing local organisation
- The group recruits people no individual company could attract alone
- A future acquisition is easier to integrate because the infrastructure already exists
That is the point at which the whole becomes more valuable than the parts — and it is observable, which is what makes it a useful test.
Why it takes longer than expected
Because each of those connections is an operational project, not a structural fact. Products do not travel between companies because an organisational chart says they should; they travel because a salesperson was trained, a customer was introduced, stock was made available and someone followed up.
Ownership creates the possibility. Execution creates the platform.
The honest position
Most groups that call themselves platforms are, at any given moment, partway there. The useful discipline is being specific about which connections actually exist and which are still intentions.
Until then, you may have a holding company. You may even have several good businesses. That is not nothing — it is simply a different thing. Related: From local champion to regional platform →
